"Aurum" is the Latin term for gold. Emperor Marc Aurel is considered the founder of the city of Regensburg. "Aurelium" covers the range from metallic shine to historical awareness: The new cultural and meeting centre of Lappersdorf near Regensburg has an outer skin made of gold-gleaming copper sheet elements, which make its shine widely visible. At the same time the shape of the building is oriented towards historical models.
A gold-gleaming external appearance, elegant restraint on the inside: The new cultural and meeting centre "Aurelium" in the Bavarian town of Lappersdorf combines traditional consciousness with the courage for something extraordinary. "Taurus" tiles from the Object programme by Rako, plain-coloured in "dark grey" and installed in three sizes, decorate walls and floors in the dressing rooms and sanitary areas.
The steep saddle roof reflects the typical view of medieval barns or areas of early monasteries and thereby reminds of the historic origins of the presently 14 000-inhabitants-town: A former "Amtshof" of the powerful monastery in Regensburg St. Emmeram built in the 13th century is said to be the nucleus of the market community of Lappersdorf. Thousands of gold-gleaming metal shingles, which do not darken over time due to a specific surface treatment, were installed scale-like on the roof surface and closed facades.
As extroverted as the outside of the new community and cultural centre is, as cautious is the inside design. In the concert hall, the two assembly rooms and the foyer of the "Aurelium" exposed concrete and wood create an attractive duo. The dressing rooms and sanitary areas received an elegant floor and wall design with plain coloured ceramic tiles from the "Object" programme by producer Rako. Around 550 square metres of the series "Taurus Color" and "Taurus Granit" were installed here in the colour scheme of "Dark Grey" and the formats 5x5 cm, 10x10 cm and 20x20 cm.
